The Clay County Agricultural Fair will have its annual run this year from April 4 through April 13, at the Paul E. Reinhold Agricultural Fairgrounds, located four miles west of Green Cove Springs on State Road 16. The Fair, with the 2013 theme of “Country Pride…County Wide,” is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors enjoying food, entertainment, rides, games, shows, exhibitors and vendors spread over the 65-acre fairgrounds.
Known as the “The People’s Fair,” the Clay County Fair is unique in that it is run by nearly 1,000 volunteers with a limited paid staff. One of those dedicated volunteers is Carlton Construction field superintendent Tom Gann.
Tom has been a volunteer for the Fair for years, part of a family tradition that has seen his wife and her grandfather volunteer and serve as board members. Tom was elected to the board in 2012, with responsibility for guest services. It is a good match – a main undertaking for the Fair this year was upgrading certain fairground structures, and Tom has used his expertise to help build a new main information booth.
Tom and his fellow board members have seen monthly planning meetings segue to a frenzy of activity over the last few months, which will culminate in 16-hour days throughout the Fair’s run.
“It’s all worth it,” said Tom. “This is a great Fair. It’s well-run, family oriented, safe and clean. We have great musicians coming to our main stage and lots of things to see and do everywhere else. In the past the Clay County Fair has received several awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE), and we know this year will be just as good.”
Matt Carlton, Carlton Construction president and founder, said, “As a field superintendent, Tom is at our residential job sites every day, ensuring that subcontractors and tradesmen are doing everything to meet our high standards and making sure our clients are completely satisfied. We’re proud that he brings the same passion and expertise to the Fair that he offers our clients every day.”
Carlton Construction is also a sponsor of the Fair, donating materials and labor for fairground projects.
As noted, the Fair runs from April 4 through April 13. A complete schedule and ticket information can be found at Clay County Fair.
