“Empty Bowls Luncheon” Promotes Hunger Awareness

Carlton Construction is proud to note that Rusty White, Sr. Project Manager/Business Development is a dedicated board member with Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida http://lssjax.org, a faith-based provider of services for people in need. Second Harvest North Florida http://www.wenourishhope.org/ is the oldest and largest program of Lutheran Social Services. Its mission is to distribute food and grocery products to hungry people and to educate the public about domestic hunger.

On Tuesday, November 19th, Second Harvest hosted the 29th annual Empty Bowls Luncheon, an event demonstrating community support for those dealing with hunger. Luncheon attendees could choose as a gift one of hundreds of ceramic bowls made by local area students and senior citizen groups. Attendees could also purchase additional bowls, as well as participate in a silent auction for unique, handcrafted bowls made by local potters and ceramic artists.

The lunch itself was a simple meal of soup and bread, served by local celebrities and media personalities. Luncheon speakers, including Rusty, presented the startling facts about hunger in our communities.

After the luncheon, Rusty said, “This was a wonderful event, with proceeds directly benefiting Second Harvest and its member agencies that fight hunger in our area. The Empty Bowls Luncheon reminds us all of that, as the holiday season begins, many of our neighbors cope with hunger on a daily basis. One out of six adults, and one out of four children, are hungry or ‘food insecure,’ meaning they do not know if they will eat on any given day.”
