The Great Outdoors

With the Fourth of July upon us and summer coming into full-swing, we’re all spending a lot more time outdoors. For those building the custom home of their dreams, what’s happening with the outside space is becoming just as important as what’s happening inside. Going far beyond some deck chairs on a concrete slab, we have been working with clients and their architects to create amazingly beautiful “outdoor living” spaces. These photos,

from one of our recently completed sites, show the types of amenities that clients are looking for: a large, partially enclosed area that allows for lots of light and air, but is protected from the direct effects of the elements; cooking and storage facilities that rival most indoor arrangements; plenty of electrical and wiring for electronics; a fireplace and fire pit; elegant flooring, and enough space and comfortable furniture to entertain all the neighbors or curl up by yourself with a good book.

Earlier this year, a survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) reported that the most popular outdoor living features included:

  • Fire pits/fireplace
  • Grills
  • Seating/dining areas
  • Lighting
  • Weatherized outdoor furniture
  • Counter space and storage
  • Outdoor heaters, cooling systems and fans
  • Sinks
  • Refrigerators
  • Televisions and stereo systems
  • Showers/baths

At Carlton, we’ve handled all of these features, and more, for our clients. One interesting request we received – and were happy to make happen – was for an Italian style, wood-fired, brick pizza oven.

So, as you’re planning your dream home – whether sketching on a legal pad or developing full designs with your architect or designer – think about your outdoor living space. Be confident, that whatever you come up with, Carlton Construction can build it.
